The Zeppelin LZ 129 "Hindenburg", named after the German Reich President Paul von Hindenburg, was one of the two largest aircraft ever built, along with its sister airship LZ 130. Its maiden flight was in March 1936. 245 metres long and 41.2 metres in diameter, the Zeppelin was the largest aircraft ever built.  On 6 May 1937, it was destroyed during the landing in Lakehurst (New Jersey, USA) when the hydrogen filling ignited. 35 of the 97 people on board and one member of the ground crew died.
