The Sherman tank was the most frequently used American tank in the Second World War. More than 50.000 Shermans were produced between 1942 and 1945. They were used in all combat theatres - not only by the United States, but also by Great Britain, the Free French, China and even the Soviet Union. Originally developed to replace the medium tank M3 "Grant / Lee", the first Shermans were produced in 1942 and some early production examples were fought in North Africa in 1943. The model proved to be somewhat effective against German Mk II and Mk IV tanks, but it was thoroughly outperformed by the Tiger, Panther and King Tiger tanks. Shermans were notorious for their flammability and were named "Ronsons" after a lighter with the slogan "Lights every time".
